Sam O’Brien, a weary 60-year-old inspector in a West Midlands police force, is drawn into the disappearance of Jack, a student last seen entering a church. His young partner, Laura Shorey, speculates about supernatural explanations, aggravating O’Brien’s scepticism and driving him to seek a logical truth. The trail leads to Fr. Ian, a well-liked priest who knew Jack, but with no evidence, O’Brien turns to the boy’s diaries. Retracing Jack’s steps, he’s drawn back to the church tower – the last place Jack was seen. As Shorey uncovers troubling evidence against Fr. Ian, O’Brien’s grip on reality begins to slip, and the case hurtles toward a confrontation that will challenge everything he believes.
